Dave Hawkins

Solo and session guitarist

When you reach the age of 14 and realise, “I don’t ever remember NOT playing a guitar” you know you were born to be a guitar picker. Over the years, Tasmanian-based performer, Dave Hawkins has been honing his skills to be the whole package and bring his style of music to the people.

About Dave

“Influencers when I was younger were some of the greats, but a standout was Phil Emmanuel. Every time I watched that man play, I wanted to play like that” Imagine when Phil Emmanuel rang Dave up unexpectedly and asked him to join him on stage and play guitar. “That gig still gives me goose bumps just thinking about it.

Phil was genuine and humble and us jamming on stage was a pinch me now moment and one I will never forget”.

Whether it is a sentimental ballad or a song that just makes you feel you want to get on the dance floor now, Dave Hawkins is the whole package. “I’ve played in bands, and I’ve played support act to some great artists, but the one thing I love doing the most is my solo shows giving the fans the Dave Hawkins style of Country Music”.

Some career highlights for Dave have been playing guitar for Jon English, Aleyce Simmonds and Beccy Cole but being invited to support Tassie’s own, Wolfe Brothers, had Dave beaming with pride. “I’m still in awe of the Wolfe Brothers, they continue to put Tasmania on the map in country music circles wherever they go and sharing the stage with them is such an honour.”

Being on stage with one of Tasmania’s most successful country music guitarists, Stuart “Stuie” French, always encouraged Dave to work harder, never stop practicing and master the craft of being a hard-working picker. That French/Hawkins friendship remains strong on and off the stage. Stuie French said, “Dave Hawkins has to be one of the best musicians to come out of Tasmania. He is a great guitar picker who could hold his own anywhere playing country music. He happens to be a great singer as well, so he is the full package.”

What other people have said about Dave

When asked what her thoughts were of Dave Hawkins, Tasmanian award-winning country music performer, Gina Timms said, “Dave Hawkins is a man who will meet you for coffee and a chat, he will invite you to share his stage, he is kind and humble and he never leaves anything on that stage, Dave loves his fans as they are the whole reason, he is still doing this! I’ve never seen a bad Dave Hawkins gig and I am proud to call Dave my friend”.

Tamworth-based country music journalist Anna Rose said, “The first time I saw Dave Hawkins perform here in Tamworth when he was the Entertainer of the Year Runner-up, his energetic performance was exciting then there is the rest of the package, what a great picker and performer. Country music is in great hands while ever Dave Hawkins is picking a guitar.”
